KREWE OF RED BEANS

 

With deep roots in the city's Creole and African heritage, red beans and rice is more than just a dish. It is a beloved Monday tradition that symbolizes New Orleans history. The Red Beans Parade is a walking parade that occurs every year on Lundi Gras (the day before Mardi Gras). We create elaborate costumes glueing beans to jackets, suits, various costumes and often 3-dimensional sculptures. However, the parade and the artwork are only a piece of what the organization is about. We strive to uplift, support and connect the thriving New Orleans community and the culture bearers who make New Orleans what it is.

The Krewe of Red Beans is a New Orleans cultural institution rooted in the city's spirit of resourcefulness and community celebration. Its home, Beanlandia, is a living museum and creative hub that houses elaborate hand-crafted Krewe suits, a music hall, and collaborative educational workshop spaces.

After joining the Krewe as a parader in 2018, I came on board professionally in 2022. As Lead Artist and Co-Creative Director at Beanlandia, I designed and created large-scale installations, preserved and curated the display of bean suits, hosted krewe beaning sessions and helped shape the vision of the space as a center for immersive, community-driven art.
